Today’s youth want more than an education — they want an education that can change the world. And there’s no minimum age limit when it comes to learning and advocating for change. Two elementary school students in the United States are already thinking about some of the problems affecting global health, the climate, and the environment.
Alexis (left) is a 3rd-grade scientist and Malak (right) is a 3rd-grade writer.
They first learned about the issue of clean cooking from a book by Liz Suneby. In the book, a boy named Iqbal from Bangladesh designs a stove that doesn’t create smoke so that his mother can breathe more easily when she’s cooking.
Malak and Alexis wanted to learn more about how clean cooking can help save lives. They interviewed Maria Jolly, an Environmental Health Associate at the Clean Cooking Alliance, to hear about her first-hand connection to clean cooking.
They learned that globally, three billion people depend on polluting open fires and inefficient stoves to cook their food. They also found out that there are solutions to this problem and how clean cooking can improve health, protect the climate and the environment, and empower women and girls.
They got to work and produced their own clean cooking magazine, complete with information on the benefits of clean cooking and step-by-step instructions on how to build a solar cooker from a pizza box!
These clean cooking superstars are raising awareness about an issue that affects all of us, from the air we breathe to the climate in which we live. Alexis and Malak are real-life examples of why education is so powerful to the rise of young leaders fighting for climate action, gender equality, and a safer environment for all.
About the Clean Cooking Alliance
The Clean Cooking Alliance works with a global network of partners to build an inclusive industry that makes clean cooking accessible to the three billion people who live each day without it. Established in 2010, the Alliance is driving consumer demand, mobilizing investment to build a pipeline of scalable businesses, and fostering an enabling environment that allows the sector to thrive. Clean cooking transforms lives by improving health, protecting the climate and environment, empowering women, and helping consumers save time and money.
